Teachers and education professionals have the power to change lives and shape young minds. If a rewarding career working with children sounds like a dream, then the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) is for you. Graduates qualify to work across a wide age range:

Preschool and early childhood (birth – 5 years): Play a meaningful role in intellectual and social development during the crucial early years.

Primary school (kinder – year 6): Work across the full scale of children’s intellectual, physical and social development.

This degree prepares you for both teaching and non-teaching roles. Work with families and children in various educational settings or play constructive roles in related industries such as policy development and research.

What you will study

Gain specialist skills, knowledge and expertise across pre-school and early years (birth - 5 years) through to primary school levels (kinder - year 6). In your first year, you will develop strong core knowledge of the foundations of child development, schooling, teaching and specialist subjects. Years 3 to 4 will provide you with an increasing breadth of knowledge and expertise across the key learning areas, as well as in various specialist subjects taught in primary school.

psychology of learning and teaching

children's learning and growth across the span of birth to 12 years

families and society

programming and planning for children aged 0-5 years

language and mathematical learning

Aboriginal education

policy and issues

behaviour management

special education

ethics and professional codes of conduct

Throughout your studies, you will learn and benefit from virtual reality teacher training, professional practical experience placements, research, community experiences and ongoing volunteer opportunities.

Career opportunities

Diversify your skills and career pathways by qualifying for both teaching and non-teaching roles. Our education graduates enjoy great employment prospects with 94% securing jobs within four months of completing their degree.

Early childhood and primary education graduates gain professional teaching accreditations whilst also benefitting from wider career pathways. Work with diverse families and children in various educational settings including primary school classrooms, childcare centres and pre-schools. Qualify to teach both:

Children in their early years (birth to 5years old)

Primary school-aged children (kinder to year 6).

While most study Education to become teachers, your qualification opens doors to a multitude of other careers in related industries, including leadership and professional roles in research and policy development. For instance, you may develop and bring a new technique of behaviour management to a troubled school, which could change lives and open further career opportunities.

为来自中国的学生设计 There are a number of ways to gain entry to undergraduate programs at the University of Newcastle. You may be considered for admission on the basis of: a completed NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) or equivalent – irrespective of age of qualification; completed or partly completed higher education studies; TAFE/VET qualifications, with a minimum of a completed Certificate III (AQF level 3), excluding the Bachelor of Nursing; TAFE/VET qualifications, with a minimum of a completed Certificate II (AQF level 2) in conjunction with meeting additional performance based selection criteria for the Bachelor of Music and associated combined degrees; completion of a recognised enabling program within a 10 year period preceding admission to the University; overseas qualifications equivalent to Australian studies. English language requirement: TOEFL paper-based test score of 500; TOEFL internet based score of 60; IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0; PTE GSE score of 50; Cambridge English: Advanced score of 52.
