Study a degree in development studies

Development, poverty, inequality and environmental sustainability are some of the most important issues in the world today. Studying and understanding these issues is the key to creating a better world for future generations.

The University of Newcastle's Bachelor of Development Studies deals with these key issues in a current and global context. You will focus on key global issues in a local, national or international context. You could find yourself employed for the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, helping developing countries address their internal constraints to trade, or more locally you could work with an Indigenous community to interpret cultural messages on environmental sustainability.

No matter your focus, when you study a degree in development studies you will go on to make a positive difference in the world.

What you will study

You will study real-world issues such as globalization, environmental change, sustainable development and social justice. Our interdisciplinary approach means that in addition to your major you are exposed to a wide range of areas including:

Development Studies Majors

You will have the opportunity to focus your studies and choose from one of four majors:

Cultures and Citizenship – courses in this major will prepare you for fields related to Indigenous affairs, immigration and citizenship or community development.

Environmental Sustainability – as part of this major you will study courses to develop your analytical skills. You will also learn how to evaluate the impact of development on the environment and the community.

Globalization and Economic Development – by completing this major you could go on to work in fields related to economic policy and analysis.

Urban and Regional Development – studying courses in this major will open up employment opportunities in the fields of planning, regional or community development.

Our development studies majors are designed to allow you to gain detailed skills and a strong understanding of key principles in your chosen specialty.

为来自中国的学生设计 There are a number of ways to gain entry to undergraduate programs at the University of Newcastle. You may be considered for admission on the basis of: a completed NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) or equivalent – irrespective of age of qualification; completed or partly completed higher education studies; TAFE/VET qualifications, with a minimum of a completed Certificate III (AQF level 3), excluding the Bachelor of Nursing; TAFE/VET qualifications, with a minimum of a completed Certificate II (AQF level 2) in conjunction with meeting additional performance based selection criteria for the Bachelor of Music and associated combined degrees; completion of a recognised enabling program within a 10 year period preceding admission to the University; overseas qualifications equivalent to Australian studies. English language requirement: TOEFL paper-based test score of 500; TOEFL internet based score of 60; IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0; PTE GSE score of 50; Cambridge English: Advanced score of 52.
