At UON we train engineers capable of solving the world’s greatest challenges. As a graduate of our Bachelor of Medical Engineering (Honours), you can make medical treatment more effective, efficient, safer and more affordable, and will be uniquely placed to save and improve lives.

What is medical engineering?

Students who study our medical engineering degree will learn to apply engineering principles and design processes to find innovative solutions to healthcare problems. They bring their creativity, critical thinking, and complex problem solving skills to developing and improving technology and human systems in medical settings. They need to have strong people skills and be particularly adept at working in interdisciplinary teams.

Engineering technological solutions to health and medical problems is a rapidly growing global field. Students gain fundamental knowledge in science and mathematics, engineering design paradigms and human biosciences, together with a technical specialisation in a chosen major in one of the four key domains: medical devices (micro and nano electro-mechanical sensing systems); medical computing (medical data analytics, e-Health); medical biomechanics (prostheses design); or medical image and signal analysis.

Program learning outcomes

On successful completion of the program students will have:

• Comprehensive, theory based understanding of engineering fundamentals and/or the underpinning natural and physical sciences as applicable to the engineering discipline
• Conceptual understanding of the, mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics, and computer and information sciences which underpin the engineering discipline.

Majors

Students have the option to study four available medical engineering majors for this degree:

• Medical Biomechanics
• Medical Signal Analysis
• Medical Computing.

为来自中国的学生设计 There are a number of ways to gain entry to undergraduate programs at the University of Newcastle. You may be considered for admission on the basis of: a completed NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) or equivalent – irrespective of age of qualification; completed or partly completed higher education studies; TAFE/VET qualifications, with a minimum of a completed Certificate III (AQF level 3), excluding the Bachelor of Nursing; TAFE/VET qualifications, with a minimum of a completed Certificate II (AQF level 2) in conjunction with meeting additional performance based selection criteria for the Bachelor of Music and associated combined degrees; completion of a recognised enabling program within a 10 year period preceding admission to the University; overseas qualifications equivalent to Australian studies. English language requirement: TOEFL paper-based test score of 500; TOEFL internet based score of 60; IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0; PTE GSE score of 50; Cambridge English: Advanced score of 52.
