The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences offers both the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees with a major in geology. Individuals interested in these programs should contact the Director of graduate admissions in the department and the faculty most closely related to the applicant’s research interests for information and application procedures.

Requirements

Successful completion of the master's degree requires a minimum of 30 hours of approved graduate credit, including six hours of thesis credit, an approved written thesis proposal, successful oral defense of a written thesis, and a minimum 3.0 GPA in all graduate course work. The department also has separate course requirements in addition to University requirements. Students pursuing a MS degree must enroll in EPS 595 every semester they are in residence unless course or teaching conflicts preclude a student from being present. A student may apply a maximum of 2 credits towards graduation. Each student must also enroll in EPS 596 one time during their residency. Students also need to complete a committee-approved field experience, where a student has demonstrated proficiency in field-based Earth Sciences. In many cases this represents an undergraduate field camp course, although there are many acceptable alternatives.

为来自中国的学生设计 Applicants must have obtained a bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by the appropriate regional accrediting agency, recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEEA). A non-U.S.?degree must be equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from the United States and must be granted by a recognized or accredited foreign institution. United States degree holders must have earned a minimum of 2.7 out of a possible 4.0 GPA or a minimum of 3.0 during the senior year of undergraduate study. If you have completed previous graduate coursework, you must have earned a minimum of 3.0 out of a possible 4.0 GPA. Minimum score requirements for admission to the Graduate School are: a total score of 80 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT), a 6.5 overall band score on the IELTS.
