Course Overview

Aimed at musicians of outstanding potential and inspired by the diverse and ever-changing needs of the arts and creative industries, this programme provides fully integrated and wide-ranging training in performance/composition and related skills, to help you establish a successful career as a musician with a creative and intellectual approach to music.

Core performance modules run throughout the first three years supported by individual tuition, a range of departmental performance classes, master classes and other performance activities. This will enable you to develop an increasingly refined level of technical assurance, advanced knowledge of repertoire and style, and the ability to communicate compellingly with an audience through performance. The training also emphasises the development of collaborative music making skills through involvement in chamber music and small ensembles, supported by weekly coaching and mentoring sessions.

Assessment and Feedback

The Repertoire and Style module in each of the first three years is assessed on the basis of two performance recitals, usually in the autumn and summer terms, and a technical assessment in the spring term.

Performing in Ensemble modules in years one to three are also assessed on the basis of performances within a chamber group or small ensemble. There are orchestral excerpts assessments for orchestral instrumentalists. Keyboard players will undertake collaborative skills assessments.

The core composition modules are assessed on the basis of portfolios of work, collaborative performance and oral presentation/discussion supported by written documentation.

The assessment of Musical Contexts modules is based on written portfolios, including programme notes, essays, essay analysis and project work. The outreach module is assessed by means of a written reflective report. Assessment of the teaching module is 50% practical and 50% essay-bas.
