Course Overview

Aimed at musicians of outstanding potential, this programme provides integrated training in performance, creative and intellectual approaches to jazz, along with related professional skills, in preparation for a career within a diverse and ever-changing music industry.

Core performance modules run throughout the first three years supported by individual tuition, a range of departmental performance classes and rehearsals, occasional master classes and a broad programme of performance activities. These focus on helping you to develop an increasingly refined level of technical assurance with an advanced knowledge and stylistic awareness of jazz repertoire. With support from your tutors, you will develop sophisticated approaches to genre-specific repertoire, complex improvisation and ensemble performance.

Teaching and Learning

In common with most conservatoires, there are several key defining characteristics of the undergraduate music programme at RWCMD. The programme is also distinguished by its emphasis on collaboration and collaborative approaches in all aspects of activity, and by its structures for supporting each student as an individual learner and future practitioner. Teaching also includes a range of departmental performance classes and master classes, which you will attend for the most part in the role of observer and occasionally as a performer. Your involvement in these classes is a critical element in your progression as an artist, offering important insights into your own performance, as well as that of your peers.
