What is Applied Ecology MSc?

On this course you’ll get the knowledge and skills you need for all areas of practical ecology and conservation – with a highly practical emphasis on hands-on exercises in field and laboratory settings.

In the field you’ll learn identification skills for a wide range of species, as well as industry-standard survey techniques like phase 1 habitat surveying, habitat condition assessments, national vegetation classification and bird territory mapping. In lab sessions you’ll include use of microscopes in taxonomy and analysis of environmental parameters such as water oxygen levels and soil nutrient status to enable better understanding of species’ environment interactions.

Study style

You’ll be able to choose modules and assessment topics to tailor the course to your own interests and career aspirations.

The course is block taught two days a week (currently Thursdays and Fridays). There’s a range of coursework, with an emphasis on field and laboratory research and consultancy reports – often involving live project briefs from external partners. Your assignments and especially your dissertation have direct impact on the understanding and management of species and habitats. (And there are no written exams.)

Possible careers

Graduates from this course can go on to work in:

• field-based or research roles within ecological, environmental and conservation organisations
• ecological consultancy
• careers in ecological communication, policy or education.

为来自中国的学生设计 Students should have Successful completion of a 4 year university Bachelor degree with a minimum grade of 70% overall. Three year Diploma (Dazhuan/ Zhuanke) AND evidenced three years’ relevant work experience (for Business School Masters only) and/ or a recognised 1 year pre-Masters programme.? IELTS 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in any component.
