The Master of Science in Teaching with an emphasis in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is designed to prepare both licensed and non-licensed teachers to teach English to non-native English speakers in school settings in the United States and internationally. Licensed teachers who successfully complete the ESOL endorsement courses and earn a passing score on the ESOL Praxis examination can earn a Pre-K through Grade 12 endorsement to their teaching license no matter the grade level of the initial license. This program is accredited by the Kansas State Department of Education and CAEP.

The master’s-level TESOL emphasis at PSU requires 33 graduate credit hours (6 ESOL courses and 5 Core Curriculum courses). All of the courses are available online. Students may choose to take the 6 ESOL courses first, earn the ESOL Endorsement teaching certificate, and then complete the 5 course classes in order to complete the master’s program.

Options available for the degree include: Option I: Thesis

This option is designed to prepare students for a doctoral program, for advanced professional careers, or for students wanting to complete an in-depth research experience.

Option III: Course Work

This option requires completion of course work that demonstrates evidence of advanced course work in an area of concentration. Departments will require evidence of competency through activities such as research papers, portfolios, practice, internships, comprehensive exams or other individual work. Students should check with their major department for specific requirements for the coursework.

Career Options

ESOL teaching is identified in Kansas, nationally and internationally as a high need field. Graduates with this minor can be employed in a variety of settings:

• Pre-school, Elementary, Middle level, or Secondary ESOL teacher in KS public school (teaching license required)
• English Language Institutions in the US or Internationally
• Adult Education ESOL teacher
• Community College or University Intensive English instructor
