专业概况

The faculty of the History Department at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville seeks to prepare their students for a range of careers in the profession of history, historical preservation, public history, and teaching. We emphasize methods of historical research and approaches that transcend national boundaries and privilege a global approach. This degree program offers two MA tracks—thesis and course only with comprehensive exam. For students continuing to the PhD program, the thesis track is required. For students who have no current plans to continue for the doctorate, we also offer a terminal MA and there is no foreign language requirement for the terminal MA.

The M.A. program can typically be completed in two years. The Graduate School allows six calendar years to complete the degree, starting at the beginning of the semester of the first course counted toward the degree.

The UT history department offers an MA concentration in European and Mediterranean history before 1600, working closely with the Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. Candidates receive their degrees in history, but are encouraged to participate widely in the interdisciplinary life of the institute, which brings together faculty and graduate students from eight different UT departments. Within the Medieval and Renaissance History concentration, students are encouraged to focus in one of the department’s areas of strength: Mediterranean History, Late Antiquity, the Early Middle Ages, Medieval Religious and Cultural History, the Later Middle Ages, and Continental Reformation.

为来自中国的学生设计 Applicants must have obtained a bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by the appropriate regional accrediting agency, recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEEA). A non-U.S.?degree must be equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from the United States and must be granted by a recognized or accredited foreign institution. United States degree holders must have earned a minimum of 2.7 out of a possible 4.0 GPA or a minimum of 3.0 during the senior year of undergraduate study. If you have completed previous graduate coursework, you must have earned a minimum of 3.0 out of a possible 4.0 GPA. Minimum score requirements for admission to the Graduate School are: a total score of 80 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT), a 6.5 overall band score on the IELTS.
