This degree increases your employment prospects by enabling you to gain expertise in two different areas of interest. You will learn from world-class educators and researchers1 in linguistics and benefit from our state-of-the-art learning facilities.

You will have opportunities to engage with industry partners and organisations as part of your studies through the optional Professional Directions Program

There is also an opportunity to study a portion of your degree overseas, as part of the University’s Hawke Ambassador Volunteer Experience Program (full semester) or Professional Experience Program (part semester). As part of this program you will volunteer with an international non-government organisation (NGO), usually in an overseas destination.

What you'll learn

Under the guidance of world-class researchers1 you will embark on an in-depth study of the nature of language. You will focus on:

  • Developing an in-depth understanding of human language, and how languages and cultures shape communication, identities and learning in the contemporary world.
  • Explore the ways in which fundamental to human understanding, communication and culture.
  • Use your high-level linguistic, analytical, research and problem solving skills as global professionals in a world of linguistic and cultural diversity.

This degree allows you to select two majors ensuring you graduate with a broad knowledge of two areas of interest. You can choose your second major from the following:

  • Languages (French/Italian/Japanese)
  • Law, Policy and Politics
  • Performing Arts

Career outcomes

Your knowledge of language structure and use, combined with strong analytical and research skills, can lead to further study or a career in such diverse fields as:

security and intelligence annotation analyst research public service and administration education

With additional qualifications, students can go on to specialise in:

teaching computational linguist speech pathology translating and interpreting consultancy

为来自中国的学生设计 Students must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 program. In order to gain entry, students require an additional year of study following their high school studies. For example, this can include successful completion of: One year of study at a recognised tertiary or higher education institution. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic: Overall 6.0 (with 6.0 in Reading and Writing); TOEFL iBT score of 60 with Reading and Writing not less than 18; TOEFL paper-based test (PBT) score of 550 with TWE of 4.5; Cambridge CAE/CPE score of 169; Pearson's test of English (Academic) (PTE) score of 50 with Reading and Writing communicative scores not less than 50; CELUSA score of AE4.
