Course description

The MA in English Language and Linguistics combines an intensive introduction to linguistic methodologies and research skills with detailed study of your chosen areas of linguistics or English language study. We understand that there is a great deal of variation in undergraduate courses so the English Language and Linguistics programme has been designed to give you a foundation in a broad range of linguistic methodologies and approaches, whilst building upon your existing knowledge.

You will study English Linguistics from current synchronic and diachronic perspectives, as well as developing skills in the collection, analysis and evaluation of data of many kinds and from many sources. Your ability to present and use data effectively in response to research questions will be invaluable in many professional settings. We will also be developing your ability to reflect critically on the knowledge and understanding you have gained as well as on your own learning and communication skills.

This course offers the opportunity to write a 15,000-word dissertation with one-to-one support from your supervisor. This will act as an excellent grounding in research if you're thinking of continuing to doctoral level, whilst also providing evidence of a wide range of transferable skills for those wishing to pursue careers in other areas.

You will develop transferable skills in:

• written and spoken communication
• the collection, analysis and evaluation of data of many kinds and from many sources
• methodologies for understanding and analysing language
• independent scholarly enquiry
• information retrieval and presentation

Teaching and learning

Teaching will be by seminar, workshop, group discussion, and one-to-one supervision, making innovative use of the University’s Virtual Learning Environment ‘Blackboard’.

You will be assessed by several different methods, including essays, tests, presentations, and online and collaborative exercises.

Careers and employability

A Masters degree in English Language and Linguistics is an excellent preparation for a wide range of careers. As well as deepening your knowledge in your chosen areas in the linguistics field, you will also develop transferable skills, such as research, analysis and presentation skills.

Completing an MA can be the first step in an academic career in Higher or Further Education, whilst also enhancing your career options outside the field of academia.

为来自中国的学生设计 Students must have completed a three-year college diploma from a Chinese university, you will need to take an accepted one-year Pre-Masters course or upgrade your diploma to a Bachelor’s degree before applying for a Master’s degree. English Language Requirements: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
