Our English with Creative Writing BA offers you the chance to study English literature and language from its earliest forms through to the present day, and gives you the opportunity to hone your own creative writing skills.
Leicester has a rich literary history and our library contains the personal archives of local authors Joe Orton and Sue Townsend. As well as our own experts, you’ll benefit from hearing from guest speakers - our Centre for New Writing also hosts an annual Creative Writing lecture, with previous visitors including Ben Okri, Laura Esquivel and Michael Morpurgo.
On this course you will explore the full range of key creative writing themes and forms, from prose fiction to creative nonfiction (including autobiography, memoir and travel writing), and from poetry to screenwriting.
You will perform your work in public and also write literary reviews, allowing you to learn the professional skills which will build your confidence for life after graduation. You will also come to understand the wider professional writing industries, which could include film, publishing, editing, performance, and literary events.
While reading Wilde or Dickens, you will be composing your own prose narratives; while learning about life-writing you might be reading the autobiographies of Nabokov, Wright or Maya Angelou. Our dynamic and exciting course will immerse you in a great tradition, as both a reader and an active participant.
Assessment
You will be assessed by range of different methods, in order to reflect the number of different skills you will acquire, including essays, group-work projects, oral presentations, reviews, portfolios, and exams. These assessments are designed to help you build confidence in a range of areas and to provide prospective employers with evidence that you can work effectively both as an independent researcher and as a team member. Your final degree result will be based on the work you do in the second and third years of your degree.
Careers and employability
All students take part in the Talent Academy, which provides an introduction to the resources provided by our Careers Development Service and opportunities to gain work experience with leading employers.
We offer an option module on 'Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages'. This will increase your own understanding of the English language and provide practical teaching experience. It leads to the highly respected Cambridge CELTA qualification, which will allow you to teach both in this country and abroad.
We also offer an option module on 'English and Education' which provides practical teaching experience with a placement in a local school. You can also gain direct experience in the publishing industry with the module 'Diversifying Publishing and the Literature Industry'.
