How can we add something to the World? Let’s begin with one dot. April 23rd was World Book and Copyright Day. At HD we showed our respect through Book Week with its main focus taken from Peter H. Reynold's masterpiece:“The Dot”.

Book Week 2021

Make your mark…It all starts with a dot.

Here at HD, we take pride in celebrating academic success. We all want to make our mark in the world. It is something we strive for as adults and want to build up in all our students. But where to start? How do we develop resilience, focus and dedication to lifelong learning that we so want to see in our students? It all starts with a dot…

One of the key strategies in learning a second language is learning to read accurately, understanding new vocabulary and comprehension skills. Guided reading sessions, paired reading and individual lessons all take place in the classroom and this is fundamental to building fluency in a second language. This helps our students become fluent readers. But at HD Shanghai, we aim for something even higher. We want to instil in our students a love of reading. As author Kate DiCamillo said; ‘'Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or a duty. It should be offered to them as a precious gift.' This is why we take every opportunity to expand reading horizons and create this passion for reading.

We are now at the end of a successful and enjoyable Book Week, themed around Peter H. Reynold’s book ‘The Dot.’ The beautiful book takes us on an inspiring journey where the main character is too afraid to draw. He is scared to begin, afraid of getting it wrong. This is something students can often feel on their journey to success. In the end, the main character is able to conquer their fear and create works of art, all of which started with a dot. Even more inspiring, is that the main character was able to use this new found confidence to help inspire his peers and friends. Like in the book, we want to build the courage to try and diminish the fear to failure. The students were able to express their own fears and discuss how they could overcome them through a series of book talks. Across Grades One to Five, the students took part in a range of activities from discussing the book to writing their own versions of the story. Sharing stories such as ‘The Dot’ will help to build resilience and perseverance, key qualities our students will need throughout their educational career as well as instill a love of reading.

△ live stream and draw with famous author David Shannon

We continued this theme throughout the week and Grades Two and Three were lucky enough to be able to live stream and draw with famous author David Shannon. All students were encouraged to make their mark and created incredible drawings, again all of which began with a dot.

Students were also able to take part in a scavenger hunt during lunch time, buy books from an online book fair and also enjoy a dress up day. In the ‘I’m a Podcaster’ initiative, students were encouraged to record an audiobook which will become part of a catalog of audiobooks recorded for students by students. How inspiring for young readers to hear the expressive storytelling skills of their peers! Just another example of how we aim to instill a passion for reading in our young, bilingual learners.

As we bring Book Week to a close, we encourage everyone everywhere to keep reading and travel to a whole new world with just the power of your imagination.

Start with a Dot

▽来自Susie/G5的图书周心得

As the spring passes by, the students in Shanghai HD welcomed one of the biggest events in the school Calendar — Book Week!

Everyone in the school had been looking forward to 2021’s Book Week, which had always been such an interesting and amusing event previously. It all began with a dot...

On Monday morning, Grade 5 all sat in the theatre, expecting the beginning of Book Week. Mr.Tom (Or Mr.Ward!) and Ms.Angel started off the assembly with a lovely bilingual poem about reading. After the teachers’ recitation, two students told a wonderful story: The Dot. Quinney from 5D and Kyle from 5C presented to us the short, but warm story using their powerful and lively voice. Grade 5 reveled in Vashti’s dots.

The Dot Hunt around the library was a success! You could see students in the library, holding cards and looking for dots in books. This was a great chance for children to explore more books.

Back to the curriculum, during English Class, Grade 5 had already started to write micro-fiction, which means short fiction stories. It was impressive that students tried their best to keep the stories in just 100 words, as they had unbelievable imagination and those stories all crushed in their mind, willing to be let out.

On Friday it was the dress-up day, where all students got to dress in clothing with elements of dots. We loved seeing their creative costumes!

However, dots this week are not only dots. As it was in the book The Dot, it means the beginning of everything. Make your mark, even if it is just a little dot — it’s the first step to not only a fantastic piece of art, but also to the final success.

As you see, reading is a great way to understand the world better. We read because books influence your temperament and your attitude. One’s accomplishment depends on how many books they have read. Books are the ways that the seniors communicate with children and share their experiences in the world. They teach moral lessons through these words. We need to get our concept of the world correct. That’s why we should read. We’re still children and perhaps our education in reading can start right now.

It all begins with a dot.
